Magnetic Island Race Week Sold Out In 10 Minutes

Magnetic Island race week sold out within 10 minutes of the entry tickets opening. The regatta has become a ‘must do’ event at winter’s end.

If you missed out, don’t panic. Even though tickets for Magnetic Island race week sold out, you can get online, make a request and Townsville Yacht Club will put you on a wait list, should there be any withdrawals.

The 18th edition of SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week will be from Thursday 28 August to Wednesday 3 September.

Chairman of TYC Mike Steel is amazed at how quickly the quota was filled. Three years ago, it took just under four hours to fill. Last year, about 12 minutes. “We’re so pleased sailors love to come here to race and relax with family and friends. We love having everyone here,” said Steel.

Many names are familiar from previous years, but some new players are in for the 18th edition. Quest, the two-time Sydney to Hobart winning TP52, has been to the island before, but with two former owners. This year, Grant Golombick will be Skippering Quest. “Sailing is a bit dead in Cairns, but I want to push it and get it going again. “We’ve never been before, but it’s the closest event to Cairns and we want everyone on the boat to have a good time. I heard it’s good. I can’t wait.”

Daguet 2 is making a debut at the event, though Rob Aldis and Peter Byford have raced at Magnetic before. Grant Chipperfield and Pete Dowdney entered for the first time in 2018, this year on Joker X2. Glen Myler, two-time Sydney to Hobart winner will be racing Thylacine One.
