Flying to Townsville

Heading to Magnetic Island is a relatively straightforward trip. The first step for most visitors travelling by aeroplane is flying into Townsville Airport, the nearest major airport to Magnetic Island. Located just 10 minutes from the city centre, Townsville Airport is well-connected to other parts of Australia, with multiple daily flights.

Airlines flying to Townsville include:

  • Qantas – they offer multiple daily flights from major cities including Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and also regional centres.
  • Jetstar – fly to Townsville from Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Cairns, Newcastle and other locations.
  • Virgin Australia – they will take you from most Australian major cities and even smaller areas including the Sunshine Coast, Newcastle and Rockhampton.
  • Airnorth – flies from Darwin to Townsville three times per week.

Once you have arrived at Townsville Airport, getting to the ferry terminal is simple. Grab a taxi, rideshare or shuttle service, which will take about 10–15 minutes to reach the ferry terminal.

Taking the ferry to Magnetic Island

There are two main ferry operators offering regular trips across to Magnetic Island from Townsville. They depart from different locations, but both arrive at the Nelly Bay Ferry Terminal.

  • Magnetic Island Ferries, also known as “The Barge,” is a car and passenger ferry that runs multiple times a day and is suitable for those traveling in vehicles, with trailers, or carrying large items. It takes about 45 minutes, departing from Ross Street, South Townsville.
  • SeaLink operates seven days a week and has up to 18 services per day on high-speed catamarans. They depart from the Breakwater Ferry Terminal in Townsville and carry only passengers, bikes and luggage across to the island.
