Juliette’s Magnetic Island Magic Regatta
Date: Sunday 26 July
Head to the tropics for one of Australia’s most iconic paddling events at Magnetic Island. With reef-lined waters, open ocean and scenic coastline as your backdrop, it’s more than a race—it’s an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or the excitement of paddling alongside crews from across the country, Townsville offers ideal conditions, strong competition and an exceptional atmosphere.
Whale Watching Season
July marks the height of whale watching around Magnetic Island, as humpback whales pass through the warm waters of the Great Barrier Reef. To spot them, book a local cruise or watch from one of the island’s coastal lookouts. Aquascene, Adrenalin Snorkel and Dive, and Sealink are some great options.
The Carmichael Ford Great Island Trek
Date: Saturday 8 August
Held on the scenic trails of Magnetic Island the Trek celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026. This non-competitive event lets participants walk, trek or run at their own pace through a tropical island landscape. Participants cross varied terrain, including secluded bays, rocky coastline and eucalyptus forest, with chances to spot wildlife such as koalas and sea turtles along the way.
Magnetic Island to Townsville Open Water Swim 2026
Date: Saturday 15 August
The iconic Magnetic Island to Townsville Swim is the flagship event of the TOWSA Open Water Swim Season. Make the most of North Queensland’s tropical winter and take part in one of Australia’s most iconic open water swims. The 8km swim begins at Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island and finishes at Strand Park on Townsville’s foreshore. Solo swimmers are guided by a support paddler, and entries are also available for teams of two or four.
